Brandon R. Macias, PhD., is the Director of the Cardiovascular and Vision Laboratory, at NASA-Johnson Space Center. Prior to entering graduate school, Dr. Macias worked as a staff research associate at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) supporting NASA funded human spaceflight analog countermeasure studies. He obtained his Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology from Texas A&M University with a National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) Certificate in Space Life Sciences. Dr. Macias conducted pre-doctoral research as part of a National Science Foundation Nordic Award in the experimental medicine laboratory at Linköping University, Sweden, studying mechanotransduction in bone during disuse and fracture healing. Dr. Macias conducted postdoctoral research studying Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS) at UCSD. Dr. Macias is principal investigator of several International Space Station Studies focused on characterizing and developing countermeasure SANS, and supports several other ground and analog studies to address the SANS and Cardiovascular Adaptations spaceflight risks.
