Manish Kumar is a Pre-Doctoral Research Associate in Materials Science and Engineering at Iowa State University Ames, focusing on in-space metal joining research. His research combines microgravity and terrestrial metal joining experiments and advanced materials characterization techniques to study the microstructure and mechanical reliability of metal joints under extreme temperatures. By addressing the metal joining process, metal joint’s structure, and properties, his work supports in-space assembly, fabrication, and repair (ISAFR) - which is vital for long-duration missions. Notably, Manish’s research was featured in NASA’s 2025 Science Calendar, and Dr. Nicola Fox lauded its significance for future Mars missions. Beyond research, he mentors undergraduates and graduate students, actively demonstrating leadership and collaboration. Manish has contributed to multiple NASA-funded grants (NASA PSI and NASA EPSCoR flight opportunity). A recipient of several prestigious fellowships and travel awards, including the Catron Center Fellowship and Sigma Xi Grant, he advances critical knowledge for interplanetary exploration and sustainable human presence in space.
